A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, But a just weight is His delight 11:1. And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. Individuals of any age who in their arrogance and rebellious refusal to worship God as their creator and ultimate ruler are left with only their poor judgments that are ultimately the foolish opinions of those who are committed to the ways of this world.
Proverbs is not ambiguous concerning sin, for the Scriptures Right and wrong are defined in very concrete terms: He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion Prov. A fool does not delight in understanding, But only in revealing his own mind Prov. The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel. Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life. So He gave them their request, but sent a wasting disease among them Psalm 106:13-15. I am laid low in the dust; preserve my life according to your word. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.
In the second verse of this same passage we learn that David had not only stayed home when he should have been at war, but he slept in until late in the afternoon. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. Proverbs 12:15 A stubborn fool considers his own way the right one, but a person who listens to advice is wise. In these times it can be helpful to seek the counsel of other wise and godly people. The more subtle, but equally misleading advice can come from people who care about us, but give advice based on their own fears, insecurities or expectations.
The wise is slow to speak and weighs his words. Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war. In the introduction to the Book of Proverbs the author assures the reader that this book will provide valuable insight into the will of God: The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning set guidance Prov. The sluggard has certain tell-tale characteristics, just as do the simple, and the fool. Counsel A genuine friend offers wise counsel, even a healthy clash of views. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.
That is why the book spends so much time describing the undesirable character of the sluggard, the simple, the scoffer, and the fool. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage! Divine guidance begins with a distrust of human reason and a dependence upon divine revelation and promises. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. The Bible gives examples of people who listened to the wrong type of counsel and reaped disastrous results Genesis 3:17; 16:2; Joshua 9:14; 1 Chronicles 10: 13—14; 2 Chronicles 22:4. As a result, no one will ever have all of the answers to everything in this life. Be strong, therefore, and show yourself a man. Together the God of the Word and the Word of God bring wise counsel to bear on the needs and circumstances of individuals. Believers often have enough when worldly eyes see little; the Lord is with them, without the cares, troubles, and temptations which are with the wealth of the wicked.
The New Testament teaches this truth as well. The fruit of the Spirit is the manifestation of godly character Gal. Our search for divine guidance would be something like Jonah, praying that God would lead him to find a ship to Tarshish, when God had told him to go to Ninevah.
